CINDERELLA Songs from the London Pantomime "Cinderella" (1957) (Richard Rodgers / Oscar Hammerstein II) Starring Tommy Steele, Jimmy Edwards, Yana, Bruce Trent, Kenneth Williams, Betty Marsden & Robin Palmer. Rodgers & Hammerstein originally wrote the 1957 musical "Cinderella" as a television show for U.S. audiences. In London, augmented with songs from their 1953 Broadway musical "Me And Juliet", it was transformed into a West End stage show / pantomime featuring Tommy Steele in his first stage role. A VERY SPECIAL DAY (Originally from the Broadway Show "Me And Juliet" - 1953) Tommy Steele (as Buttons) SPOKEN: Well, ever since she come to live here it's been sorta special..... I wake up each mornin' with a feeling in my heart That today will be a very special day I keep right on clinging to that feeling in my heart Till the winds of evening blow my dreams away And each night at bedtime when my world has come apart And I'm in a mood that's far from feeling gay A-with a piece of toast to munch and a nice hot cup o' tea I begin to have an 'unch that tomorrow's gonna be A very special day for me I wake up each mornin' with a feeling in my heart That today will be a very special day I keep right on clinging to that feeling in my heart Till the winds of evening blow my dreams away And each night at bedtime when my world has come apart And I'm in a mood that's far from feeling gay A-with a piece of toast to munch and a nice hot cup o' tea I begin to have an 'unch that tomorrow's gonna be A very special day (A very special day) A very special day (A very special day) A very special day for me *********************** IN MY LITTLE CORNER Yana (as Cinderella) I'm as mild and as meek as a mouse When I hear a command, I obey. But I know of a spot in my house Where no one can stand in my way. In my own little corner, in my own litter chair I can be whatever I want to be On the wing of my fancy I can fly anywhere And the world will open it's arms to me I'm a young Norwegian princess or a milk-maid I'm the greatest prima-donna in Milan I'm an heiress who has always had her silk made By her own flock of silk-worms in Japan I'm a girl men go mad for, love's a game I can play With a cool and confident kind of air Just as long as I stay in my own little corner All alone, in my own little chair. *************************** DO I LOVE YOU BECAUSE YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL Bruce Trent (as Prince Charming) & Yana (as Cinderella) BRUCE: Do I love you because you're beautiful Or are you beautiful because I love you Am I making believe I see in you A girl to love me, to be really true Do I want you because you're wonderful Or are you wonderful because I want you Are you the sweet invention of a lover's dream Or are you really as beautiful as you seem YANA: Perhaps you are just imagining me. Perhaps I'm imagining you. BRUCE: Am I making believe I see in you A girl to love me, to be really true BOTH: Do I want you because you're wonderful Or are you wonderful because I want you (YANA: Want you) Are you the sweet invention of a lover's dream Or are you really as wonderful as you seem ************************************************ THE PRINCE IS GIVING A BALL Robin Palmer (as Lionel) & Chorus LIONEL: The Prince is giving a Ball (The Prince is giving a Ball, the Prince is giving a Ball!) But she's the only one I could ever settle down with. I'm not kiddin', I mean it. You know, it's funny how you go through life, meetin' all sorts o' diff'rent girls. Then all of a sudden, one comes along and you know, you just know..... When first I set my longing eyes on you I saw my future shining in your face And when you smiled an murmured, "How d'ya do?" The room became a dream enchanted place The chandaliers were shooting stars The drums and horns and soft guitars Were soundin' more like nightingales The window curtains blew like sails And I was floatin' just above the floor Feelin' slightly taller than before Out of nowhere came the feeling Cue the feeling, a marriage type love We were dancing and her eyelash Blinked on my lash, a marriage type love We made a date, couldn't wait for my day off Now it's a thing, with a ring for the pay-off Well, I'm her pigeon, through with roaming Now I'm homing, to marriage type love and her SPOKEN: I'd like to tell you a secret. I just keep on seein' her, even when she's not there, she just seems to appear from out of nowhere, it's marvellous..... We were dancing and her eyelash It blinked on my lash, a marriage type love We made a date and we couldn't wait then for my day off Now it is a thing, and it's with a ring for the pay-off I am her pigeon, through with roaming Now I'm homing to marriage type love and her! ************************************* WHEN YOU'RE DRIVING THROUGH THE MOONLIGHT / A LOVELY NIGHT Tommy Steele (as Buttons) & Yana (as Cinderella) - 1957 SPOKEN: YANA: I can see the lights of the carriages as they climb the hill to the Palace. Oh, I wish I was in one of them. TOMMY: But you can be if you want to. You can be anywhere doing anything. All you gotta do is imagine it. It's a game I always play If there's something that you really want and you can't 'ave it, imagine it. It's just as good. Come and 'elp me. YANA: Yes. TOMMY: When you're drivin' through the moonlight on the 'ighway When you're drivin' through the moonlight to a dance You are breathless with a wild anticipation Of adventure and excitement and romance Then at last you see the towers of the Palace Silhouetted in the sky above the park And below there is a row of lighted windows Like a lovely diamond necklace in the dark YANA: Ooh, tell me more. TOMMY: All right then. TOMMY: I suppose that when you come into the ballroom And the room itself is floatin' in the air You are suddenly confronted by 'is 'ighness And you're frozen like a statue on the stair You're afraid he'll hear the way your heart is beating And you know you mustn't make the first advance You are seriously thinking of retreating When it seems to you he's asking you to dance YANA: And how d'you know this is so? TOMMY: I do no more than guess. TOMMY: A lovely night, a lovely night A finer night you know you've never seen You meet your Prince, a charming Prince As charming as a Prince will ever be YANA: The stars in the hazy heaven tremble above you While he is whispering, "Darling, I love you" BOTH: You say "Goodbye", away you'll fly But on your lips you keep a kiss All your life you'll dream of this Lovely, lovely night TOMMY: Ye-e-e-a-a-a! YANA: Oh, much better. Now you must go to bed. It's getting late. TOMMY: Oh, can't I stay up with you? YANA: No. You must get your rest. TOMMY: I'm sorry about the invitation.
