So sweet and lovely, but what an affair Not even a kiss since we met You just won't love me, but I don't care For I will get you yet You can stop me from kissing you You can stop me from cuddling too You can treat me mean, honey, that's all right But I'll get even with you tonight 'Cause you can't stop me from dreaming You can stop me from holding hands Make me listen to your commands You can say, "No, No!", honey, that's all right But I'll get even with you tonight 'Cause you can't stop me from dreaming >From one o'clock till nine I'll dream you're mine I'll steal a kiss See what you're gonna miss You can stop me romancing you You're the boss now, but we're not through You can turn me down, honey, that's all right But I'll get even with you tonight 'Cause you can't stop me from dreaming ++++++++++ TRIVIA: Charlie & His Orchestra were an early 1940's Nazi-sponsored German propaganda swing band. Jazz music styles were considered rebellious by the Nazis, but, ironically, propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels conceived of using the style in radio broadcasts aimed at Great Britain, Canada and the United States. British listeners could hear the band every Wednesday and Saturday at around 9 pm. The purpose of the band was to stir pro-Nazi sympathy, draw attention to World War II Allied losses, convince listeners that Great Britain was a pawn for American and Jewish interests, and carry Adolf Hitler's messages in an entertaining form. The songs stressed how badly the war was going for the target audience, and how it was only going to be a matter of time before they would be beaten. American swing and popular British songs were initially performed true to the original, until about the second or third stanza where pro-German lyrics and monologues would be introduced. The band was led by Lutz Templin with vocals by Karl "Charlie" Schwedler. They made over 90 recordings between March 1941 and February 1943. As recorded by CHARLIE & HIS ORCHESTRA: You can stop me from kissing you You can stop me from cuddling too You can treat me mean, honey, that's all right But I'll get even with you tonight 'Cause you can't stop me from dreaming You can stop me from holding hands Make me listen to your commands You can say, "No, No!", honey, that's all right But I'll get even with you tonight 'Cause you can't stop me from dreaming >From one o'clock till nine I'll dream you're mine I'll steal a kiss See what you're gonna miss You can stop me romancing you You're the boss now, but we're not through You can turn me down, honey, that's all right But I'll get even with you tonight 'Cause you can't stop me from dreaming I'll dedicate this to England Germany is beating you You deny it, but it's true You tell the world that you're alright But the German blockade is holding you tight And all your ships are sinking You can't stop the Germans, you're in their hands You'll have to listen to their commands Keep on denying German victories, that's alright The Germans get even with you and fight They're wide awake and they're not dreaming Your idea divine to march to the Rhine Didn't come true, how you must be feeling blue You can't stop Germany from beating you Germany is the boss now and you are through You've double-crossed many countries alright But Europe gets even with you and fights Mr. Churchill and your politicians are dreaming (Transcribed by Mel Priddle - August 2011)
