It's hard to realise things could be the way they seem
I'll never get over the shock it's been to me
To find out after all this time

I waited late in life to marry you, Anne

The only girl I ever cared the least bit about
When I see the friends who warned me

When we got married it took all my savin's
To buy you the fine house you wanted
And that brand new car
I gave you nearly all of ev'ry paycheck
And I just kept enough for cigarettes
I set up charge accounts in all the department stores
