BAD IN EVERY MAN, THE
From the film "Manhattan Melodrama" (1934)
(Music: Richard Rodgers / Lyrics: Lorenz Hart)
Shirley Ross (Film Soundtrack) - 1934
Oh, Lord, what is the matter with me
I'm just permitted to see
The bad in every man
Oh, hear me, Lord, I could be good to a lover
But then I always discover
The bad in every man
They like to tell you that they love you only
And you believe it, so you'll know you're wrong
A little hall room can be awfully lonely
And the night can be so very long
Oh, Lord, perhaps I'll alter my plan
And overlook if I can
The bad in every man
TRIVIA:
Originally titled "Prayer (Oh Lord, Make Me A Movie Star)", it was to have
been sung by Jean Harlow in the 1933 film, "Hollywood Party". This idea was
dropped and Lorenz Hart wrote new words, changing the title to "It's Just
That Kind of Play" for proposed use in the 1934 film "Manhattan Melodrama".
This version was also not used, but a third attempt, titled "The Bad In
Every Man", was sung by Shirley Ross in that same film. The following year
it underwent another lyric change and became the classic romantic ballad
"Blue Moon".
