FORGIVE ME
(Jack Yellen / Milton Ager (m & l) )
As sung by Gene Austin 1927
What can I do or say to you
I know exactly how you feel
I've hurt you so, I'm wrong I know
Please listen dear to my appeal.
Forgive me, please forgive me
I didn't mean to make you cry
I love you, and I need you
Do anything but don't say goodbye.
Let bygones, just be bygones
For we all make mistakes now and then
I'm sorry, forgive me my dear
And let's be sweethearts again.
(bridge)
Let bygones, just be bygones
For we all make mistakes now and then
I'm sorry, forgive me my dear
And let's be sweethearts again.
Notes:
Gene Austin, an American, was a popular singer, composer and songwriter
of the 1920s and 30s. Despite never having learned to read music, he
wrote over 100 songs, some of which have become standards. His first hit
song WHEN MY SUGAR WALKS DOWN THE STREET, he co-wrote with Jimmy
McHugh and Irving Mills.
Austin, with his tenor voice, was one of the original crooners. Many of
his songs, were released for hand cranked phonographs and played on
early radio. With RCA Victor records, he sold over 86 million copies
which was a startling number for those days. His rendition of
MY BLUE HEAVEN in 1927 sold over 12 million copies alone.

FORGIVE ME
(Jack Yellen / Milton Ager (m & l) )
As sung by Eddie Fisher 1952 (with the Hugo Winterhalder Orchestra)
Forgive me, please forgive me
I didn't mean to make you cry
I love you, and I need you
Do anything but don't say goodbye.
Let bygones, just be bygones
We all make mistakes now and then
I'm sorry, forgive me my dear
And let's be sweethearts again.
(bridge)
[Chorus]
I love you and I need you
Do anything but don't say goodbye
Let bygones just be bygones
We all make mistakes now and then
I'm sorry forgive me my dear
And let's be sweethearts again.
Notes:
Jack Yellen, one of the co-composers, was a Polish born lyricist. He
wrote over 200 songs, most notably HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN and
AIN'T SHE SWEET.
Milton Ager, as the co-composer here, was Chicago USA born and was
involved in a number of Broadway musicals. He frequently collaborated
with his partner Yellen. They wrote many songs, but Ager's biggest hits
were perhaps I'M NOBODY'S BABY from 1920 and
SOME DAY WE'LL MEET AGAIN from 1932.
Eddie Fisher, the American crooner and heartthrob hailing from
Pennsylvania USA, is inextricably and historically linked to his stormy
marriages with his 3 (of 5) famous wives, Debbie Reynolds, Elizabeth
Taylor and Connie Stevens. Some feel he was the most famous pop singles
artist of the early 1950s and his strong tenor voice and good looks
combined with his choice of material was captivating for many of that
period. Two of his more notable offerings were I'M WALKING BEHIND YOU
and WISH YOU WERE HERE.
[ Forgive Me ] was released in 1952 as the 'A' side of a 7 inch 45 rpm
single. The 'B' side was THAT'S THE CHANCE YOU TAKE
