HAND FULL OF ASHES
(Connie Dycus)
Connie Dycus - 1960
The postman smiled and handed me your letter
With trembling hands I opened it with pride
As I read each fabled sentence that you wrote me
My broken heart fell all apart inside
The letter told me you had wed another
You asked me to forgive you if I can
All the dreams that we have made and planned together
I now hold them in the palm of my hand
I'm burning all the letters that you wrote me
I stand and burn the pages one by one
I'm keeping all the ashes from your letters
Just a memory for the damage you have done
Here I stand with a hand full of ashes
Ashes from your letters I have burned
All I have is a hand full of ashes
From a page of life that I can never turn
Here I stand with a hand full of ashes
Ashes from your letters I have burned
All I have is a hand full of ashes
From a page of life that I can never turn
