(I'M CAUGHT BETWEEN) GOODBYE AND I LOVE YOU
(Richard Carpenter (m) / John Bettis (l) )
Sung by The Carpenters 1975 < Horizon >
I have somethin' to tell you
And I know it won't be easy
I've been thinking these past few days
It might be time to leave.
You're like a stranger
Then you're a lover
Never the same
Always hard to believe.
I'm caught between goodbye and I love you
Never knowin' quite where I stand
I'm caught between goodbye and I love you
Fallin' both ways, nowhere to land.
So constantly stranded
I can't understand it
This double life you've handed me
Is like the devil and the deep blue sea.
(bridge)
If we go on much longer
If my doubts grow any stronger
Then I may have to let you go
If only to survive.
Give me a reason
Why should I stay here
I've tried so hard
Just to keep love alive.
I'm caught between goodbye and I love you
Never knowin' quite where I stand
I'm caught between goodbye and I love you
Fallin' both ways, nowhere to land.
So constantly stranded
I can't understand it
This double life you've handed me
Is like the devil and the deep blue sea.
NOTES:
The Carpenters were a talented brother/
sister singer/songwriting duo hailing
from Los Angeles CA USA. As of 2013,
they had sold more than 100 million units
(source BBC).
Their distinctive soft rock sound provided
contrast to the loud and raucous sounds of
the day. As well as singing, Karen was
accomplished at drums and brother Richard
at piano.
Sadly, the duo's career ended prematurely
with the death of Karen Carpenter in 1983.
She was 32 years old. The Grammy Hall Of Fame
recognized the Carpenters as providing music of
'lasting qualitative or history significance'
(older than 25 years) by honouring them with
their prestigious award.
< I'm Caught Between Goodbye And I Love You >
was also released on the 'B' side of a 7 inch
single in 1975. The 'A' side was
< There's A Kind Of Hush > . (see elsewhere in this ILP database).n
