As recorded by ANNETTE HANSHAW, 13th September 1926:
Left my home and began to roam around
Now I pine to be Carolina bound
Tired out and knocked about this way
And I feel like I want to kneel and pray
Let me lay me down to sleep in Carolina
With a peaceful pillow 'neath my weary head
For a rolling stone like me there's nothing finer
Than the comfort of that cozey little bed
Oh Lawdy, what a thrill to hear that whippoorwill
Sing me a rockabye lullaby from a hill
Mister Dream Man, won't you please come 'round and get me
Let me lay me down to sleep in Caroline
Ten o'clock and I slumber back
Eleven o'clock, still I toss around
Twelve o'clock, count a million sheep
One o'clock, not a wink of sleep
Two o'clock and I close an eye
Three o'clock and the milk goes by
Four, Five, Six and then
Alarm clock rings and I'm back again
Do you wonder I'm this way
Do you wonder why I say
Let me lay me down to sleep in Carolina
With a peaceful pillow 'neath my weary head
For a rolling stone like me there's nothing finer
Than the comfort of that cozey little bed
Oh Lawdy, what a thrill to hear that whippoorwill
Sing me a rockabye lullaby from the hill, doo-doo-doo
Mister Dream Man, won't you please come 'round and get me
Let me lay me down to sleep in Caroline
Ah-doo-doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo
That's all!
