LULLABY IN RHYTHM
(Benny Goodman / Walter Hirsch / Clarence Profit / Edgar Sampson) 1938
As sung by Connee Boswell 1956 (with Sy Oliver's Orchestra)
Rereleased on [Connee] 2007
Him a lullaby in rhythm
Dream your dreams and wonder with'em
Even drums will come and take you
Through the night.
To my lullaby in rhythm
All the breezes sigh in rhythm
Rest my love, let nothin' wake you
'Til the light.
Ooh, stars dance, while the shadows creep
Mister moonman's gonna to rock you up high
Rock you to sleep ooh.
Him a lullaby in rhythm
Dream your dreams and wonder with'em
Sandman's gonna come and make you sleep
My baby goodnight.
Rock-a-bye baby, in the tree top
Now when the wind blows, the cradle will rock
And if the bough breaks, the cradle will fall
Down will come your rock-a-bye baby and all.
Ooh, rock, rock-a bye
Ooh, rock, rock-a bye
Ooh, rock-a-bye
Rock, rock, rock-a-bye my baby and...
Him a lullaby in rhythm
Dream your dreams and wonder with'em
Sandman's gonna come and make you sleep
My baby goodnight.
Notes:
The Boswell sisters were American and hailed from Kansas City, Missouri
(not Kansas City, Kansas). Connee Boswell (Connie by birth) was born the
middle sister of the three girls, the others being Martha (the oldest),
and Helvetia (Vet) (the youngest). The Boswells were known for their
very intricate harmonies in vocal jazz and are arguably the best jazz
vocal group of all time. One may view just how sophisticated (scatting,
gulling, riffing et al) they were in their close harmonies by viewing
CRAZY PEOPLE
and
SENTIMENTAL GENTLEMAN FROM GEORGIA, THE
Connee was referred to by many of her followers, as just plain CBoz and
of course the others, as MBoz and VBoz. Connee often took the lead in
many vocals and historically is credited with being the primary arranger
of their music. Notably, she was not held back by the fact she suffered
a childhood accident which left her confined to a wheel chair during her
entire career. The sisters started recording in 1930 but eventually
split up when MBoz and VBoz opted for married life so Connee continued
on alone with a solo career. Her own influence in the jazz world was
remarkable and even Ella Fitzgerald was quoted as saying that CBoz was
the one person that influenced her in her career.
They were affectionately known as 'The Bozzies' by their enthusiastic
fans.
