NOTHING BREAKS BUT THE HEART
From the London Show "Zip Goes A Million" (1951)
(George Posford / Eric Maschwitz)
Warde Donovan - 1951
Andrew Halliday - 2001
Nothing breaks, nothing breaks but the heart
When the love of your life
Is away or alone in the park
When the evening begins
And the lamp starts to glitter and glow
There's the whole of the town at your feet
But you've nowhere to go
No romance, not a table for two
There's a guy with a gal in the dark
But the guy isn't you
When the stars tumble down
And you wait for the sun's rays to start
When the love of your life is away
Nothing breaks but the heart
Then you hate the sound of the city
And the distant song of the street
And you envy the laughter of lovers
Going somewhere with someone to meet
But for you no step on the stairway
Nor an eager voice on the phone
And the tick of the clock seems to whisper
"You're alone, empty heart, all alone"
No romance, not a table for two
There's a guy with a gal in the dark
But the guy isn't you
When the stars tumble down
And you wait for the sun's rays to start
When the love of your life is away
Nothing breaks but the heart
