O' FOR THE WINGS OF A DOVE
Felix Mendelsohn (m) William Bartholemew (l) 1844
O' for the wings, for the wings of a dove,
Far away, far away I would rove.
O' for the wings, for the wings of a dove,
Far away, far away,
Far away, far away I would rove.
In the wilderness build me a nest,
And remain there for ever at rest.
In the wilderness build me, build me a nest,
And remain there forever at rest.
note -
The most famous recording was by choirboy Ernest Lough
(1911-2000) and The Temple Choir, recorded March 15th 1927
at the Temple Church, London.
For The Gramophone Company (later HMV and then EMI) this was
their best selling record of 1927. The master recording
wore out and had to be re-recorded in 1928.
