PLEASE LEAVE MY BUTTER ALONE
Elsie & Doris Waters (as Gert & Daisy) - 1940
Elsie Carlisle - 1940
As recorded by ELSIE & DORIS WATERS:
DAISY: Gert
GERT: What?
DAISY:
I've got a nice friendly face, I think you will agree
And folks are always poppin' in to 'ave a cup o' tea
You might think there's a war on, they argue and they shout
But it's not war or politics I'm worryin' about
GERT: What is it?
DAISY: Everybody pinches my butter
GERT: Blimey!
DAISY: They won't leave my butter alone
BOTH:
And nothing is better than butter
For keeping the old man at home
DAISY: Lah-dee-dah-dee-dah-dee
BOTH:
Everybody says I'm old-fashioned
To sit on the things that are rationed
So, pinch all my ham and my plum and apple jam
But please leave my butter alone
Please leve my butter alone
DAISY:
I went to Ten Downing Street and sat outside to wait
To wait for Mister Chamberlain to come out to the gate
And then I said, "Your Honour, I've come 'ere to complain"
"I hope you'll see that I don't 'ave to mention it again"
BOTH:
Everybody pinches my butter
They won't leave my butter alone
And nothing is better than butter
For keeping the old man at home
Everybody says I'm old-fashioned
To sit on the things that are rationed
So, pinch all my ham and my plum and apple jam
But please leave my butter alone
Please leave my butter alone
DAISY: I bet it was old Mother Butler, Gert
GERT: Go on
DAISY: Been in when me back was turned and knocked it off
GERT: She would!
DAISY: And didn't I 'ave a row with 'er last week
You ought to 'ave 'eard what she called me
GERT: Well, Dais, didn't you answer 'er back?
DAISY:
I couldn't, she'd used all the best words
Wanted to borrow my clothesline
When I said no fear, she banged 'er back door in my face
And accused me of mindin' me own business
It's a thing I never do, Gert
GERT: No
DAISY:
And that bloomin' wireless set of 'ers is goin' all day long
and all night
GERT: Well, why don't ya knock on the wall and stop 'em
DAISY: We did knock, with a 'ammer, and what d'ya think?
GERT: They stopped
DAISY:
Stopped me foot. She rushed out in the backyard and said
"This is a nice time to start 'angin' pictures"
I said, Well, we can 'ear your wireless all over our 'ouse"
She said, Well, if that's the case,
What about payin' off a couple of the instalments for us"
Oh, blimey, there it goes again
Come on, Gert, let's sing and drown it
GERT: Come on
DAISY: Shockin'
BOTH:
Nothing is better than butter
For keeping the old man at home
Everybody says I'm old-fashioned
GERT: To sit on the things that are rationed
DAISY: Oh, blimey, Lady Haw-Haw
BOTH:
So, pinch all my ham and my plum and apple jam
But please leave my butter alone
Please leave my butter alone

As recorded by ELSIE CARLISLE:
Everybody pinches my butter
They won't leave my butter alone
And nothing is better than butter
For keeping the old man at home
Everybody says I'm old-fashioned
To sit on the things that are rationed
So, pinch all my ham and my plum and apple jam
But please leave my butter alone
I've got a nice friendly face, I think you will agree
And folks are always popping in to have a cup of tea
You might think there's a war on, why they argue and they shout
But it's not wars or politics that I'm worryin' about
D'ya know that everybody pinches my butter, it's disgusting
They won't leave my butter alone, getting quite worried
Ya know there's nothing that's better than a little bit o' butter,
you know what I mean
For keeping your old man at home, keeping him a bit busy like
Ya know everybody says I'm a bit old-fashioned, I'm funny that way
And I like to so sit on my things that I've got rationed
You can pinch all my ham and my plum and apple jam
But, ah, please leave my butter alone, I'll take care of it
Please leave my butter alone, that's what I say
(Instrumental Interlude)
Everybody says that I'm old-fashioned
To sit on the things that are rationed
So, pinch all my ham and my plum and apple jam
But please leave my butter alone
Please leave my butter alone
