SAVE THE CHILDREN
(Linda Hargrove / Pete Drake)
Linda Hargrove - 1975
Mama and Daddy couldn't save their marriage to save their lives
Mama took us kids and put us in the car and rode away one night
And I remember Daddy cryin' on the porch as his life rode out of sight
Mama tried hard to hide the tears, but I could see 'em through the highway lights
Now Mama and Daddy didn't want their children to grow up wrong
And they knew it wasn't right for us to see how they couldn't get along
And I heard Mama prayin' real soft when she thought we were all asleep
She was saying Jesus Lord, I'll put them in your keep
Save the children, Lord, don't let them go astray
And Lord, please forgive me for this day
Mama she don't know the kind of life I live today
Livin' in this neon hell where the lonely pay to play
Somehow despite what Mama said this child has gone astray
Lord, I know your mem'ry's good and you'll remember what my Mama prayed
Save the children, Lord, don't let them go astray
And Lord, please forgive me for this day
Save the children, Lord, don't let them go astray
And Lord, please forgive me for this day
