THAT'S ALL SHE EVER SAID EXCEPT GOODBYE
(Nat Stuckey)
Nat Stuckey - 1976
She was packin' her last suitcase
When I came in late this evening
And I asked her, but she wouldn't tell me why
She stopped long enough to blow her nose
Kept on packing underclothes
Like I was just some stranger passin' by
Now the thought had never crossed my mind
That she would really leave me
Though half of all I've told her's been a lie
Then she turned and looked right through me
Said a few unkind words to me
That's all she ever said except 'Goodbye'
Well could it be that she found out about
The girl that I hang out with
Down at Hank and Nadine's Broadway Social Club
Or did I fall out of favour
'Cause the only ring I gave 'er
Was the one she had to scrub around the tub
So I swore that I'd do better
If she'd just unpack the suitcase
Didn't she think I deserved another try
But she gave her answer to me
With that obscene sign she threw me
And that's all she ever said except 'Goodbye'
Well could it be that she found out about
The girl that I hang out with
Down at Hank and Nadine's Broadway Social Club
Or did I fall out of favour
'Cause the only ring I gave 'er
Was the one she had to scrub around the tub
So I followed her outside
Where she had a taxi waitin'
She got in and didn't even bat an eye
Told the driver not to linger
Slammed the cab door on my finger
And that's all she ever said except 'Goodbye'
Yes, that's all she ever said except 'Goodbye'
Damn, that smarts!
