THAT'S FOR ME (1962)
(Richard Rodgers (m) / Oscar Hammerstein II (l) )
As sung by Pat Boone (Original Music Soundtrack 1962)
Right between the eyes.
Quite a belt that blow I felt this morning.
Fate gave me no warning
Great was my surprise.
I saw you standing in the sun
And you were something to see.
I know what I like, and I liked what I saw
And I said to myself "That's for me."
"A lovely morning" I remarked
And you were quick to agree.
You wanted to walk
And I nodded my head
As I breathlessly said "That's for me."
You left me standing here alone
The day's adventures are through.
There's nothing for me but the dream in my heart
And the dream in my heart, that's for you.
Oh, my darling, that's for you.
I know what I like, and I liked what I saw
And I said to myself yeah, "That's for me."
"A lovely morning" I remarked
And you were quick to agree.
That's for me.
You left me standing here alone
The day's adventures are through.
There's nothing for me but the dream in my heart
And the dream in my heart, that's for you.
Oh, my darling, that's for you.
Notes re the 1933, 1945 and 1962 versions of State Fair:
The 1945 version of State Fair featured Vivian Blaine
(and Dick Haymes), who were big band singers of the
1940s and 50s. Blaine who's lyrics appear here, was
most well known for her role in Guys and Dolls in 1955.
This musical was adapted from a Phil Stong novel of the
same name.
State Fair was the only Rodgers and Hammerstein musical
written directly for film. It eventually was adapted for
a Broadway musical in 1996.
State Fair 1945
Director: Walter Lang
Leads: Jeanne Crain / Dana Andrews / Dick Haymes / Vivian Blaine
State Fair 1962
Director: José Ferrer
Leads: Pat Boone / Bobby Darin / Ann-Margret / Tom Ewell
State Fair also existed as a movie in 1933 directed by Henry King
and starred Will Rogers and Janet Gaynor along with Lew Ayres.
It was well received at the time, unlike the 1962 musical which
was deemed by many to be unsuccessful in practically all respects.
