THE ASHES OF MY HEART
(Words by Jeff Branen / Music by Arthur Lange, 1916)
The day is dying, the years are flying, the while I'm
sighing, because of you. I'm sad and lonely, I'm thinking
only of someone's eyes of blue; of someone's kisses too.
Among the roses, where love reposes, my heart discloses,
what you should know. Alone I sigh, dear; for you and I,
dear; once loved each other so. 'Twas in the long ago.
In the ashes of my heart fires of love no longer burn, still it
seems I feel a start at the thought of your return 'tho
it's years since last we met and we're doomed to live apart,
there's a spark of hope still burning but it's buried
somewhere in the ashes of my heart.
