THE BIRTHDAY OF THE LITTLE PRINCESS
Noel Gay
1939
There once was a little princess,
A sweet little girlie I guess.
And as her birthday was near,
I'd like you to hear of..
The birthday of the little Princess.
She meant to have plenty of fun,
A fine time for everyone.
And she knew what exactly what ought to be done,
At the Birthday of the little Princess.
She sent some invitations out
By the Royal Equerry..
"Please come along to my birthday party,
Come and have a royal cup of tea- do come- do come"!
So the King came, the Queen came
And all the Lords and Ladies came,
To greet her, and wish her,
Many Happy returns of the day.
All decorum, went to hang-
You should have heard the crackers bang..
And seen the aristocracy,
Enjoying all the revelry.
Should have seen the King and Queen,
Happy as they'd ever been,
Having seen the party through,
Just like other parents do.
Oh what a party, 'til nurse came to say,
With the greatest respect it was high time for bed.
So, the King said- the Queen said,
And all the Lords and Ladies said,
" Good Night dear, God bless you,
Many happy returns of the day."
And later on, asleep that night,
The Princess lay a-sleeping....
She dreamt she saw the King and Queen,
Happy as they'd ever been,
Having see the party through,
Just like other parents do.
