TOP OF THE TOWN
(Jimmy McHugh (m) / Harold Adamson (l) )
As sung by Gertrude Niesen 1937 as a 78 single (Cy Feuer and His Orchestra)
As recorded by:
Clarence Williams and His Orchestra
Boilermaker Jazz Band
Top of the town
We're on the top of the town
And it's a thrill looking down
On old Manhattan.
High in the clouds
Just watching the crowds of people below
Living in dreams where everything seems
Like part of a show.
Nothing is real
The world is paper mâché
And darling, that's why I feel
I want to stay.
Up where it's hazy
Far from the crazy merry-go-round
Oh, there's nothing can top
Being up on the top of the town.
(bridge)
Nothing is real
The world is paper mâché
And darling, that's why I feel
I want to stay.
Up where it's hazy
Far from the crazy merry-go-round
Oh, there's nothing can top
Being up on the top of the town.

The lyrics for this work are:
What a perfect night
We're high above the town and it's lights
What a perfect time
For us to climb to dazzling heights.
You made love so inviting
And life is really exciting...
Top of the town
We're on the top of the town
And it's a thrill looking down
On old Manhattan.
High in the clouds
Just watching the crowds of people below
Living in dreams where everything seems
Like part of a show.
Nothing is real
The world is paper mâché
And darling, that's why I feel
I want to stay.
Up where it's hazy
Far from the crazy merry-go-round
For there's nothing can top
Being up on the top of the town.
