VICTORY ROLL, THE
(George Posford / Harold Purcell)
as recorded by Pat Kirkwood
June 15th 1941
London
Break of day,
They're up and away,
Into the grey clouds flying;
Flying forth,
Away to the north,
Sound of their engines dying.
Over the mountains, over the sea,
Keeping the skyways free,
For we are waiting till they return;
What will their tidings be?
The victory roll,
The victory roll,
Here come the Spitfires back from patrol!
Look up quick,
The victory roll!
How lovely to see
The three and then three,
Here come the Spitfires home from the sea!
Home for tea,
The victory roll!
Flying low beneath the cloud,
Hearts below are proud!
Into view
Against the blue,
With their engines roaring loud.
The victory roll,
The victory roll,
Here come the Spitfires back from patrol!
Look up quick,
There's thee victory roll!
Home from the mountains, home from the sea,
Leaving the skyways free,
Homes that are waiting for their return,
Fit for victory!
The victory roll,
The victory roll,
The victory roll!
