WALTER, WALTER WHAT ABOUT THE ALTAR
(Harper, Darby, Brown)
As recorded by:

A studio band Dir. Jay Wilbur
Recorded in January 1933
Walter Wise was one of the guys who wouldn't spend a bean
He'd rather walk than take a bus, he was so awful mean
To his girl's house he'd wander round and stay there half the night
And when the evening sun was down they'd sit without a light
He wouldn't give her presents, or buy her anything
So one night her family all gathered round to sing
Walter, Walter what about the altar
When are you going to name the happy day
Walter, Walter your neck is in the halter
And we're going to lead you on your way
When are the celebrations, don't make any mistake
We'll borrow the decorations and hire a wedding cake
So Walter, Walter what about the altar
When are you going to name the happy day
He'd pretend he couldn't hear so they'd shout all the more
He'd push poor Mary off his lap and slam the bloomin' door
They'd gather their relations then, about two hundred strong
They'd shout 'Come off it, Shylock, are you going to keep us long'
We'll whip round for your furniture, don't be afraid to leap
There's lots of empty houses now, and bassinets are cheap
So Walter, Walter what about the altar
When are you going to name the happy day
Walter, Walter your neck is in the halter
And we're going to lead you on your way
When are the celebrations, don't make any mistake
We'll borrow the decorations and hire a wedding cake
So Walter, Walter what about the altar
When are you going to name the happy day.
(Musical Break)
When are the celebrations, don't make any mistake
We'll borrow the decorations and hire a wedding cake
So Walter, Walter what about the altar
When are you going to name the happy day.
