WASHING THE BLUES FROM MY SOUL
David Oppenheim / Robinson
as rec by Sophie Tucker 1929
World weary, burdened down
With useless cares and worries;
My homeland's calling me,
A voice within says "Hurry!".
Down through the lowlands, a-trudgin' along,
With eyes up to heaven and a heart full of song,
Lawdy, can't you see
I'm washing the blues from my soul?
I lifted my hopes to the highest
And found a world friendly and true;
Now right where you are you can find it,
You only need the right point of view!
I put off the old ways, took on the new;
The clouds are divided, the light's shining through!
Lawdy, can't you see
I'm washing the blues from my soul?
I've found out the things that are worthwhile,
The bluebird has paid me a call,
The grey days I've been through have taught me
This life is not so bad after all!
'Cause I'm through with pretending I'm what I don't feel,
I've gone back to nature where everything's real!
Lawdy, can't you see
I'm washing the blues from my soul?
