THREE TRUCK DRIVERS
(Leigh Newton, 1999)
Three truck drivers came from the east.
They were west of Wagga Wagga, they were south of Ivanhoe,
They were roaring down the highway on the straightest stretch of road,
They were dodging kangaroos in the middle of the night
When a light appeared before them in a blinding flash of white.
Three truck drivers came from the east.
Three truck drivers came from the east.
They could feel their hearts as-thumpin' when they heard the thunder clap,
They were yelling on the CB saying, "What the hell is that?"
But the light still kept on burning like sodium aflame,
And the thing kept getting closer as they headed 'cross the plain.
Three truck drivers came from the east.
Bridge 1:
Was it something coming t'wards them, maybe something standing still?
A crash up on the highway, a beacon on a hill?
Could it be a ball of lightning or a comet in the sky?
But it seemed to beckon to them and they didn't know just why.
Three truck drivers came from the east.
One had come from Pt Macquarie but I guess that didn't matter,
One had come from Bundaberg and one had come from Wangaratta.
They were near the Murrumbidgee with a thousand k's to go
When the light had sprung upon them like a nightmare on the road.
Three truck drivers came from the east.
Three truck drivers came from the east.
Nothing much made sense of how the light was shone about;
They were staring at the vision when the radios gave out
When the rigs came to a halt with a hundred yards to go
They saw the light go twisting down a narrow dusty road.
Three truck drivers came from the east.
Bridge 2:
Could it be a tanker burning, could it be a plane on fire?
Could it be a flying saucer? Folks would surely call them liars!
Could it be a ball of lightning or a comet in the sky?
But it seemed to beckon to them and they didn't know just why.
Three truck drivers came from the east.
And they followed on in convoy just like ducklings down the track,
Through gates and stubble paddocks to a rusty shed outback;
Where the light shone all about and like a star on Christmas tree
It seemed to say, now resting, "Just see what you can see."
Three truck drivers came from the east.
Three truck drivers came from the east.
Found a couple in the shed there by a dim old kero lamp,
With a wet and brand new baby where the ground was red and damp;
They went scrabbling in their pockets for a gift to fit a king,
They gave a shining opal, a bunch of keys, a wedding ring.
