I GUESS IT HAD TO BE THAT WAY (Arthur Johnston / Sam Coslow (m & l) ) As sung by Bing Crosby 1933/34 (Jimmie Grier and His Orchestra) It could have been so divine It seemed like heaven's design We didn't have the right To face the bliss in sight I guess it had to be that way. If we had met years ago It would have been different I know I felt it so did you But what were we to do I guess it had to be that way. There I was Depressing things I didn't care to There you were Forbidden fruit I didn't dare to touch. My pretty bubble has burst Somebody else saw you first I might have know that fate Would be a little late I guess it had to be that way. (bridge) There I was Depressing things I didn't care to There you were Forbidden fruit I didn't dare to touch. My pretty bubble has burst Somebody else saw you first I might have know that fate Would be a little late I guess it had to be that way. Notes: Bing Crosby and his bass-baritone voice made him one of the best selling recording artists to date. It is estimated that has over half a billion records in circulation. One of his notable contributions was his generous support of the American soldiers during WWII. Those familiar with mono/stereo reproduction systems will note that Crosby invested large amounts of money in the Ampex Corporation and had a strong hand in it's initial survival. Ampex developed the first audio tape recorders which replaced the old audio disk cutting lathes. This invention revolutionized the recording industry forever. The song writing team of Johnston and Coslow created a number of memorable hits such as MY OLD FLAME and THANKS Coslow himself, had a varied and interesting background, being a singer at first and then the first Broadway songwriter to be hired by Paramount pictures in 1929. Later in life, he joined a company which invented a device called the Panoram. Panorams, (rear projection systems), were designed to play 'soundies' which were 3 minute musical films. Panorams were 'kissing cousins' to the coin juke box and provided the same basic function, albeit it for film. Reportedly, by the mid 1940s, there were thousands of these devices in diners, bars and other jukebox locations. I GUESS IT HAD TO BE THAT WAY was released on < Bing Crosby Going Hollywood Vol. 1 (1930-1936 > in 1998. I GUESS IT HAD TO BE THAT WAY was also released as the 'A' side of a 78 rpm disk in 1934. The 'B' side was STARLIGHT (HELP ME FIND THE ONE I LOVE) (Transcribed by David Story May 2014)
