I HAD TO CHANGE THE WORDS Bennett / Tobias / Cowan as rec by Connee Boswell Jan 4th 1934 New York Just for you I wrote a melody, And the words were sweet as they could be; Since you're gone I haven't changed the melody, But I had to change the words! When I heard you say, "This is the end!", and I knew my heart would never mend, Words and music somehow didn't seem to blend; I had to change the words! first I took "My only one", Turned it into "Lonely one", "Blue skies" into "Grey"; Then I took "For evermore", Turned it into "Nevermore", I'm sorry to say! If someday you should come back to me, Just for you I'll sing that melody, And you'll hear it just the way it used to be, Before I changed the words. If someday you should come back to me, Just for you I'll sing that melody, And you'll hear it just the way it used to be, Before I changed the words.
