STARLIGHT (HELP ME FIND THE ONE I LOVE)
(Bernice Petkere / Joe Young (m & l) ) 1931
As sung by Bing Crosby 1932 {Bing Crosby 28 Songs (1928-1934) }
Here the angelus, while all is still
From a little steeple on the hill
Soon the light of day will disappear
And the night will find me, wishing here.
Starlight, starlight,
First star I've seen tonight
Help me find the one I love.
Starlight, starlight,
Who knows, you might
Know the one I'm thinking of.
Can't you hear me sighin'
In a lonely prayer
Can't you see me cryin'
From away up there...come closer
Starlight, starlight,
First star I've seen tonight
Help me find the one I love.
(bridge with whistling)
Can't you hear me sighin'
In a lonely prayer
Can't you see me cryin'
From away up there...come closer
Starlight, starlight,
First star I've seen tonight
Help me find the one I love.
Notes:
One of the creators of this song, Bernice Petkere, was lovingly referred
to as the 'Queen Of Tin Pan Alley'. Her first published song was this
tune in 1931. She contributed a number of standards in her career, among
them, LULLABY OF THE LEAVES
Other songs she played a part in were CLOSE YOUR EYES, and BY A
RIPPLING STREAM.
The second creator, Joe Young, an American, was originally not a
composer at all but a singer and song salesman (to publishers) by
profession. He is perhaps best known for two of his creations,
IN A SHANTY IN OLD SHANTY TOWN
and I'M GONNA SIT RIGHT DOWN AND WRITE MYSELF A LETTER
which he co-wrote with Fred Ahlert in 1935.
STARLIGHT (HELP ME FIND THE ONE I LOVE) was released as the 'B' side
to a 78 rpm disk in 1934. The 'A' side was I GUESS IT HAD TO BE THAT WAY
(Transcribed by David Story May 2014)
