HO HUM (Heyman / Suesse (m & l) ) Sung by Annette Hanshaw 1931 Good-bye to winter I'll see you next year Hello to Springtime Gee, I am glad your here. Listen you fliver Get yourself outside Come on my sweetheart Take me for a ride. Ho hum, spring is here now Ho hum, skies are very clear now Ho hum, love is near now For you and me. Ho hum, April showers Ho hum, lots of pretty flowers Ho hum, happy hours For you and me. All the world is sweet once again Heaven's at my feet once again. Ho hum, lazy weather Ho hum, feelin' like a feather Ho hum, we're together And so, ho hum. Serenading, ocean wading, orangeade-ing Ho hum Street musicians, great ambitions, good conditions Ho hum. (bridge) Chocolate bar, milk from dairies Motorcars drawin' huckleberries Twinkling stars, John's and Mary's Strolling up and down the park. In the sky, moonlight hovers On the bed, soft and downy covers On the street, lots of lovers Findin' places nice and dark. There's one thing on which we agree Spring is very young, so are we. Ooh, ooh, frogs are groaning Mandolins are moaning Oooh, microphoning From me to you Oh, dear. NOTES: (Catherine) Annette Hanshaw, an American, was a blues and jazz singer from the 1920s and early 1930s and was purportedly one of the first female jazz singers of that era. She was known as 'The Personality Girl' or later on as 'The Flapper Girl' by her followers and fit the 1920s period perfectly with her flapper style and sweet innocent-sounding voice. She often ended her songs with the cute tag "That's All". (see MY BLACKBIRDS ARE BLUEBIRDS NOW or THE ONE IN THE WORLD in this ILP database for examples of this habit). Some consider the later Hanshaw as a 'torch singer' along with the likes of Ruth Etting, Mildred Bailey, Libby Holman, Helen Morgan and Bebe Daniels. Strangely, she thought her abilities 'wanting' by her own standards and retired early to married life, after only 15 years in the business. HO HUM was also sung by Bing Crosby 1957 with Gus Arnheim and His Orchestra < HO HUM > appeared on an RCA EP as the 'B2' track. The 'B1' track was ONE MORE TIME The A1' track on this same RCA EP was WRAP YOUR TROUBLES IN DREAMS while the 'A2' track was THEM THERE EYES ******************* HO HUM Bing Crosby also recorded < HO HUM > with Loyce (Lois) Whiteman. The lyrics vary somewhat from Hanshaw's lyrics above. Ho hum, spring is here now [Crosby] Ho hum, skies are very clear now [Whiteman] Ho hum, love is near now [Crosby] For you and me. This Van Heusen/Burke creation originated from the 1942 film < Road To Morocco >. (Transcribed by David Story- April 2014)
