THOSE GOOD OLD DREAMS
(Richard Carpenter (m) / John Bettis (l) )
As released by the Carpenters < Made In America > 1981
As a child I was known for make-believin'
All alone I created fantasies
As I grew people called it self-deceivin'
But my heart helped me hold the memories.
As I walk through the world I find around me
Somethin' new, yet familiar's in the air
I feel it everywhere
Like a child's eyes.
On a Christmas night
I'm lookin' at you now
Findin' answers to my prayers.
It's a new day for those good old dreams
One by one it seems they're comin' true
Here's the mornin' that my heart had seen
Here's the mornin' that just had to come through.
Same old stage but what a change of scene
No more dark horizons, only blue
It's a new day for those good old dreams
All my life I dreamed of lovin' you.
(bridge)
You're a spark of a long forgotten fire
You're a touch of a slowly growin' wind
You're a taste of the ever-changin' seasons
Tellin' me there are some things that don't end.
We have left all the darkness far behind us
All those hopes that we held along the way
Have made it to this day
Like an old love song
Gone for much too long
You hear it once again
And it carries you away.
It's a new day for those good old dreams
One by one it seems they're comin' true
Here's the mornin’ that my heart had seen
Here's the mornin’ that just had to come through.
Same old stage but what a change of scene
No more dark horizons, only blue
It's a new day for those good old dreams
All my life I dreamed of you.
It's a new day for those good old dreams
And it’s all because of you.
NOTES:
This song was released in both album form and as a 45 rpm single (it’s B side was
< When It’s Gone (It’s Just Gone) > see elsewhere in this ILP database).
The Carpenters were a talented brother/sister singer/songwriting duo
hailing from Los Angeles CA USA. As of 2013, they had sold more than
100 million units (source BBC).
Their distinctive soft rock sound provided contrast to the loud and
raucous sounds of the day. As well as singing, Karen was accomplished
at drums and brother Richard at piano.
Sadly, the duo's career ended prematurely with the death of
Karen Carpenter in 1983. She was 32 years old. < Made In America >
was the final album released before Karen’s passing.
The Grammy Hall Of Fame recognized the Carpenters as providing
music of 'lasting qualitative or history significance'
(older than 25 years) by honouring them with their prestigious award.
Additional Note: This song was also released in video showing Karen in a
yellow pant suit. This pant suit was later worn by Cynthia Gibb (Karen)
in the January 1989 TV movie 'The Karen Carpenter Story'.
